DSIR, under the Ministry of Science and Technology, carries out activities for the promotion, development, utilisation and transfer of indigenous technology. It promotes R&D in industry, supports scientific laboratories and SMEs developing technologies with commercial potential and facilitates the transfer of technology between various stakeholders by providing a formal platform.

The various initiatives under the Technology Promotion, Development and Utilization Programme (TDPU) are aimed at the promotion of R&D in the industry; development and commercialisation of technologies; acquisition, management and export of technology; fostering greater domestic and international collaboration; information dissemination and e-governance initiatives, etc.

TDPU programmes:

Industrial R&D Promotion Programme [IRDPP] : The broad objectives are to:

  • Bring in-house R&D into sharper focus;
  • Strengthen R&D infrastructure in industry andSIROs
  • Promote R&D initiatives of the industry and SIROs
  • Ensure that the contributions made by the in-house R&D centres and SIROs dovetail adequately in the overall context of technological & industrial development 

Technology Development and Demonstration Programme [TDDP] : TDDP has addressed itself for following broad objectives to achieve self-sufficiency in industrial growth :

  • Supporting industry for technology absorption, development and demonstration
  • Building indigenous capabilities for development and commercialisation of contemporary products and process of high impact.
  • Involvement of national research organisations in joint projects with industry

Technopreneur Promotion Programme [TePP] : TePP supports innovators right up to the point of starting a new venture. Many individuals and start-ups have utilized TePP funds to patent their innovations and also for customer and market validation. Needless to state, here are numerous checks and balances by TePP committees which closely monitor the activities of the innovator.

Technology Management Programme [TMP] : The Technology Management (TM) Programme of the DSIR works in close association with industry, industry associations, research organizations, academic institutes, State level agencies and Govt. organizations, consultancy organizations and other Government Departments towards its objective of enhancing technology management capability in the country.

International Technology Transfer Programme [ITTP] : The primary objective is to promote international technology transfer and trade including exports of technologies, projects, services and technology intensive products.

Asian and Pacific Centre for Transfer of Technology [APCTT]

Consultancy Promotion Programme [CPP] : The main objectives of the Scheme are to strengthen and promote consultancy services in various areas including:

  • Consultancy services for acquisition or import of technologies, requiring technological and managerial competence to evaluate the technologies and engineering them as per local requirements, Promoting quality Foreign Direct Investments (inward and outward).
  • Consultancy services for export of projects, technologies and services and setting up Joint Ventures abroad, etc.
  • Consultancy services for development and transfer of technologies from R&D institutes and strengthening linkages of R&D system with industry.
  • Consultancies for new and emerging areas of national interest.
  • Other areas as may be identified including special efforts for consultancies for SMEs and tiny sector.

Technology Information Facilitation Programme [TIFP] : The specific objectives of TIF programme are to:

  • develop appropriate endogenous information capacities to support the R&D activities,
  • support the production of local content and promote use of indigenous knowledge,
  • promote information and knowledge networking at local, regional and national levels to facilitate flow and sharing of information resources,
  • map the national S & T productivity in relation to the international trend,
  • promote national and international cooperation in related areas

Technology Development & Utilization Programme for Women [TDUPW]

  • Promoting the adoption of new technologies by women.
  • Awareness creation and training of women on technology related issues with regard to women.
  • Promoting Technological up-gradation of tiny, small and medium enterprises run by women entrepreneurs.
  • Showcasing of appropriate technologies and organizing demonstration programmes for the benefit of women
  • Design and development of products, processes beneficial to women
