The Department of Science & Technology (DST) was established in May 1971, with the objective of promoting new areas of Science & Technology and to play the role of a nodal department for organising, coordinating and promoting S&T activities in the country.
DST plays a significant role in the technology development programmes relating to key sectors, as well as in the development of international cooperation in S&T. The cardinal focus areas for the department include popularisation of science, relating science to society, promotion of entrepreneurship, national resources data management and generation of data bases, and initiatives targeting empowerment of women through applications of science and technology.
